Whiskey Lullaby Rated R

Part One

"So Nick, got any plans tonight?" Nick Carter’s band mate Howie Dorough asked as he sat on Nick’s couch watching a tv show called The Munsters.

Nick looked at Howie and smiled. "Yeah, I got a date tonight with Abby."

"So, I take it everything is going good. You guys have been dating for, what, 2, 3 years now?" Howie asked as he laughed at Eddie Munster .

"Actually its 3 years today. And I planned something special for tonight." Nick said with a smile.

"What are yall gonna do?" Howie questioned.

"Well, I haven’t told anybody this, well until now..." Nick paused as Howie looked at him intently. "I’m gonna take her to the same place I took her on our first date and then..."

Nick was interrupted by Howie. "And then your gonna ask her to live with you..." Howie guessed. "Um, actually I’m going to ask her to marry me." Nick stated as he looked at Howie’s blank face.

"Aren’t you going to say anything?" Nick asked after 3 and a half minutes of silence.

"Are you ready to get married?" Howie asked Nick.

"I really think I am. I love her more than anything and I want to be with her forever. And she is just so special to me." Nick replied.

"I would’ve thought that you would wanna live together first." Howie said.

"Yeah, but she’s a christian and she doesn’t believe in sex before marriage, living together before marriage and etc. So I respect that and that makes me love her even more. I mean, I would think that you and Liza would’ve lived together by now."

"Yeah, I know but she’s not ready, so I’ll wait." Howie said as Three's Company came on.

"Howie, man, can’t we watch something else besides TV Land?" Nick asked as he grabbed the remote from Howie turned on the Braves game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Angie, I seriously don’t have anything to wear tonight, and tonight I have to look absolutely perfect." Abby Hunter said as she looked through her closet for a blouse to match her skirt she was planning to wear on her date with Nick tonight.

"Why is tonight so special?" Angie Hunter’ Walker, Abby’s older sister asked.

"Because tonight is our 3 year anniversary and he said he’s taking me somewhere very special, and that I should dress a little more dressy than casual, you know?" Abby began looking thorough her dresser. "I was thinking of my light blue sheer skirt, but I don’t have a blouse to wear with it."

"Well, why don’t you wear my white blouse? It’s a little dressy and Josh helped my pick it out a couple weeks ago, and I only wore it once, so its basically brand new. And Josh likes it so you know Nick will think its cute." Angie announced.

"MOMMY!!" Angie heard her 4 year old son Taylor yell. "Well, Tay and Josh are going camping tonight, so I better get him home and packed, and I’ll be back around 5 to bring the blouse, what time will Nick be here?" Angie asked.

"About 7." Abby said. "But most likely he’ll be late like always, so he’ll be here between 7:30 and 8:00pm" Abby continued.

"MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!" Taylor yelled. "I’M COOOMING!! OK, I’ll be back in a little while." Angie said, she said bye to her sister and grabbed her son and left.

As Abby laid down to rest on her bed, she thought about Nick and her’s first date. He was so nervous. He spilt his water 3 times and stuttered a lot too. Abby quietly giggled to herself. She then thought about that night, their first kiss. It was so romantic. They were standing outside beside her toyota corolla and they were listening to the song ‘Truly madly deeply’ by Savage Garden. Nick looked into her soft green eyes and said, "You look so beautiful." Then, without hesitation he leaned in and kissed her.

"Abby! Phone!" Abby heard her mom call from downstairs. "Thanks mom!" Abby replied she picked up the phone.

9:30pm, Daytona beach in Daytona, FL

"Nick, thank you for dinner. It was great. I can’t believe you took me back to the same denny’s we had our first date at. That was so sweet." Abby said as she kissed Nick’s cheek as they walked hand in hand.

"Well, I’m very glad you liked it." Nick replied as he and Abby stopped at the end of the pier.

"Nick it’s so beautiful out here." Abby said as Nick stood behind Abby with his arms wrapped around her.

"Abs, I have something I want to ask you." Nick said.

Abby slowly turned around. "What is it?" She asked. Her hair blowing in the spring air.

"Ever since our first date, I knew that I loved you. And for 3 years, the love I have for you has just grown. Everyday you cease to amaze me because your still with me returning my love back." Abby smiled her sweet smile as Nick continued. "Even when things get a little tough, like when I’m on tour, or with the tabloids, your always there and your still with me. I love you more than life itself, and I would do absolutely anything for you. You are my entire world." Nick got down on one knee. "So Abby if your wondering, why I have you here tonight. I wanna be your husband and I want you to be my wife. I know I don’t have much to give you, but what I have means everything. My last name?" Nick stated.

Abby smiled with tears in her eyes. "Nick, I would love to have your last name." Abby stated as Nick pulled out a princess cut, sapphire engagement ring and placed it on her left hand. Nick and Abby kissed under the moonlight and began to dream of their future together.

PART TWO

10 months later

"I now pronounce you man and wife. Nickolas, you may now kiss the bride." The minister stated as Nick lifted the veil and kissed Abby on her lips as the preacher announced, "May I introduce Mr. And Mrs. Nickolas Gene Carter." The crowd of 250 erupted in applause as Nick and Abby walked out of the church and into their limo.

"Well, we’re married." Nick said as he kissed Abby and looked into her eyes.

"Yep, and now today is the day we start the beginning of the rest of our lives." Abby said. "And most importantly, the wedding night!" Nick said playfully.

"Nick!" Abby said as she playfully slapped Nick’s arm.

"Cancun, is so beautiful. I know you’ll love it. And tonight I planned something very romantic."

"I can’t wait." Abby replied as she stared at her new husband.

A Year and a half later

"Hello?" Abby asked as she answered her phone.

"Hey baby." Nick answered.

"Hey sweetie, how’s the tour going?" Abby asked.

"Its going real good. These smalled little club concerts are good for me. But its weird because the other guys aren’t here, ya know?" Nick said as he sat down on his tour bus. "How are you and the baby?" Nick asked.

"Oh, we’re both fine..." Abby said as she rubbed her belly, 4 and a half months. "Brian and Leighanne are coming over today to hang out and check up on me. I think we’re gonna watch a movie or something." Abby said.

"Well, I hope you guys have fun. I miss you so much."

"Oh Nick I miss you too. I hate having a relationship over the phone. These 2 months have been so long." A tear slowly escaped from Abby's eye.

"I know, but I’ll be home in 2 weeks after we shoot the video in LA and then no more touring for awhile I already talked about it with my managers, and of course they understand." Nick stated.

"Well I’m glad. But, I need to go and get ready. Bri and Leighanne’s gonna be here any minute now." Abby said.

"Alright Abs, I’ll call you back later tonight, ok?" Nick said. "

Alright sweetie." Abby said as the two said "bye" in unison.

One week later

"I’m so terribly sorry Mrs. Carter. But I’m afraid you had a miscarriage" Dr. Long announced as Leighanne looked shocked.

Abby just sat there in her hospital gown as tears ran down her face, "You mean my baby is dead?" Abby asked as she began cry harder.

"I’m so very sorry Mrs. Carter." Dr. Long said.

"Do you know how it happened?" Abby asked.

"I think it is because of the stress of Mr. Carter being away." Dr. Long replied.

"So, are you telling my its all my fault that my baby is dead?!" Abby exclaimed as she began to raise her voice.

"Abby hunny, calm down, its not your fault." Leighanne said as she rubbed her back soothingly.

"I’ll give you ladies a moment." Dr. Long said as he left the room.

"How in the world am I going to tell Nick? He wanted this baby so bad." Abby said as she wiped her face a looked at her hands.

"Sweetheart, Nick loves you more than life itself. He’ll be there for you and you really need him right now. Your sister just passed away from that accident and now you lose your baby. You should call him and tell him to come home so you can talk to him."

"OK, can you call him while I change, isn’t he with Brian?" Abby asked as she sniffed.

"No problem. I’ll call Bri right now." Leighanne said as Abby went into the bathroom to change. Brian’s cell phone rang three times before he finally answered.

"Hello?" Brian answered.

"Hey Brian, its me." Leighanne said trembling into the phone.

"Sweetheart are you ok? You sound upset." Brian said as he walked away from Nick. The two decided to hang out the entire day. Which is something they haven’t done in a while.

"No actually I’m not ok. I’m at the hospital." Leighanne said as she sat down on a chair near the door.

"Oh my God, are you ok? What’s wrong?" Brian asked as his heart began to race.

"I’m actually fine. Its Abby. I uh, went to pick her up so we could go shopping for baby stuff and....she uh..." Leighanne said as she trailed off.

"Leighanne hunny what happened?" Brian asked as he panicked.

"Brian, she had a miscarriage." Leighanne stated.

"Oh no. Is she ok?" Brian asked. "How’s she holding up?"

"She’s devastated. Aren’t you guys in LA? I really think yall should get back here. I don’t think I’ll be able to leave her alone. She’s really not stable right now." Leighanne said.

"Yeah, I don’t think you should leave her alone either, why don’t you and Baily stay with her tonight. I’ll figure out something to tell Nick to get him home tomorrow, or maybe late tonight." Brian said.

"Leighanne, is that Brian?" Abby asked as she walked out of the bathroom.

"Hang on a sec." Leighanne said to Brian. "Yeah it is, he said he’s gonna tell Nick something to get him home tonight or tomorrow." Leighanne stated.

"Oh ok, ummmm, just try not to worry him." Abby said.

"Did you hear that Brian?" Leighanne asked.

"Yeah. I’ll try not too. But here he comes so I’ll call you later and tell you what’s going on, ok?" Brian said.

"Alright, sweetie. Bye." Leighanne said as she hung up the phone and looked over at Abby’s tear stained face. "Let’s get you home."

"Hey Rok, who were you talking to?" Nick asked as he walked into his dressing room to where Brian was.

"Oh, it was Leighanne. Nick something happened at home. And you really need to go home, tonight if possible." Brian said.

"Is everything ok? Is Abby alright?" Nick asked as panic over took him.

"Nick, we really just need to get home. You need to cancel the shoot and we need to get back on the first flight to Orlando." Brian demanded.

Nick nodded and he went out to the his managers and told them that the shoot would have to be put on hold until further notice.

Orlando, FL. September 5, 2003 10:00am

"Abby?" Nick asked as he walked into the house.

Leighanne walked out of the livingroom with her son in her arms. "She’s in the bedroom." She said as Nick left her and Brian standing in the hall.

"Abby baby, What’s going on?" Nick asked as he sat down beside her on their bed. Abby’s face was white as a ghost, she doesn’t look like she had gotten any sleep. She looked at Nick and smiled. "Hey." Was all that she said.

"Abs, what’s going on. I don’t see you in two months and all you say is hey." Nick said as Abby began to cry. "Abby, please just talk to me." Nick said as she laid her head on Nick’s shoulder.

She looked into Nick’s blue eyes and told him everything. "Nick...I had a miscarriage yesterday." Abby said as Nick face went from a peachy color to a pale colorless color.

After 10 minutes of pure silence, Abby finally spoke. "Nick, I know you wanted this so bad. Its all my fucking fault!" Abby yelled as she began going from sad to angry. She walked over to her dresser and grabbed a vase an threw it. "I HATE THIS!" Abby screamed. "Wait, Abby baby calm down. This is not your fault." Nick said as he walked over to Abby. "YES IT IS. The doctor said it was probably because of the stress I was under. If I wasn't being stressful I wouldn’t have lost my baby." Abby said as she began to cry harder. Nick didn’t know what to do. They both just fell to the floor and began to cry...together.

Part Three

Its been at least 3 years since Nick and Abby have been married. They found out after the miscarriage that Abby was not able to have any children. Her body was not strong enough to carry a child for 9 months. Nick still looked hopeful about having kids. He always talked about adopting or having Sargent mother to carry their child for them. Abby thought about it but never really considered it. Nick decided to take a year off to spend time with his wife and his family.

"Abby, lately, you’ve been acting very distant, is everything ok?" Nick asked as the two sat one night watching tv together.

"Nick I don't know." Abby shook her head slowly as Nick turned the TV off.

"Abby, what’s going on?" Nick's worry was evident in his shaky voice.

"I really don’t know how to say this but...I really think we should spend some time apart..." Abby said as tears welled up in her eyes and she looked away.

"WHAT? WHY?!" Nick exclaimed not believing what he was hearing as he stood quickly.

"Nick, lately I’ve been real depressed. You know that since you've seen me talking the prozac. We’ve been together for 6 years dating and married. I love you so much. I really just need time to get my head together. You know?" Abby said as the tears flew freely from her brown eyes.

"Abby, please don’t do this to me. I promise you I don’t think I can make a through a day without you here. You cant leave me." Nick said as Abby stood.

"Baby, its just a separation. I've been thinking about this for a couple months now. I need to clear some stuff. I need to clear my head and figure out what I want. You understand don’t you? Please Nick, don’t make this harder for me than it already is." Abby commanded.

"Abby, I love you." Nick said as he began to cry. She broke his heart. Why would she do this to him? He would give up anything for her. He would do anything for her. And this is what he deserves? "Why are you doing this to me?" Nick stuttered.

"I’m not trying to do anything to you Nick. I need time to myself. I love you, more than anything. I just need...."

"Time." Nick finished her sentence for her coldly.

"Nick, I’ll be at my mom’s for a while. I’ll call tomorrow ok?" Abby said the tears still flowing from her eyes.

"Alright..." Nick started bitterly. "If time is what you need, you got it. I guess I’ll see you around." Nick said as Abby grabbed her purse, walked around Nick and to the front door. "I’ll get my stuff tomorrow." She said to Nick's back, she opened the door slowly and looked at Nick one more time, before walking out of his life.

Part Four

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette

Nick spent years trying to get over Abby. He never found someone else. All he did all night and all day was thinking about his ex-wife.

She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget

Exactly one year after Abby filed for separation, she filed for divorce. She love Nick, but her heart wasn’t into the marriage anymore. Nick could never get over how she broke his heart. She was his first love. His band mates would come over all the time to hang out or try to cheer him up. Nothing worked, He was in too much pain to get her off his mind.

We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time

Nightly Nick would go to the local bar to have a drink or two. Nick made headlines weekly because of his bar fights, or the nights he would spend in jail. He tried to get as drunk as he could to wash away the memory of the love he once had.

But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind

Not even Nick’s best friends could help him get over the loss of his love, they watched him drink his pain away a little every day.

On a late April night, the night Nick asked Abby to marry him and the same night they had their first date, Nick was alone and he felt as worse and as cold as he could ever feel. Nobody knew his pain or could help him get over it. Nobody in his mind knew what he was feeling. So on that April night, Nick pulled out a gun, he put it to his head and shot himself and he fell down face first into the pillow and the world talked.

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

Nobody was more shocked by Nick’s sudden death than his best friends. Brian, Howie, Kevin, and AJ. They were devastated. They cried until they couldn’t cry anymore. Abby most of all couldn’t believe what had happened. Nick was her heart. She still loved him and the rumors about his death flew around for years, and that’s long she blamed herself for his suicide and everyone’s pain. It was all her fault.

The rumors flew but nobody know how much she blamed herself
For years and years, she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath

On a nightly basis Abby would go out to clubs, sleep around with practically anyone and drink hard core whiskey. Nothing but. She found out that Nick had whiskey in his system. He loved the taste of whiskey. One stormy night Abby went out again. AJ warned her not to. He tried to plead with her to stay in. They could get a movie or something. But she wouldn’t listen. She told her friends she didn’t drink. But they didn’t believe her. They knew that she blamed herself about Nick. But they told her it wasn’t her fault.

She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night

A late night, on a mid-April night. The fifth year anniversary of Nick’s death, Abby went to his old home. Everything still in place the way Nick left it. His parents wouldn’t sell it. He was buried under the willow tree along his back yard, about 50 feet from the beach. ‘He loved the beach.’ Abby thought to herself as she drunkenly walked upstairs to their bedroom where he committed suicide. She sat on the bed and opened the night stand drawer. There, she saw a 9mm hand gun lying there. She picked it up and looked at a picture of her and Nick. She grabbed it and stared at how happy she was. ‘I made a horrible mistake...’ She picked up another photo of Nick by himself. She looked at the picture then at the gun...

She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away is memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
